May 9-13

Hello families,

This week for our 30 by 30 challenge, we did lots of fun activities outside!

We made our names out of nature, did a scavenger hunt, learned about texture and did some rubbings, enjoying playing and being in the sun, and helped our older buddies design a garden for their Minecraft challenge.

In math, we have been working with Fact Families. These are three numbers that are related and create 2 addition and 2 subtraction problems. We used the unifix cubes to help model the equations. We started with all of the numbers provided in the fact family, and then moved on to determining the missing number from the fact family.

This week we have also been talking about the elements of a story. We watched a great story called "The Panda Problem" and students wrote and/drew about the characters, setting, problem and solution. We are working up to writing our own stories!

We continued to work with the Nature Kits this week. Specifically we looked at some beaver artifacts and coyote artifacts. We read an Indigenous legend called "How the Beaver got its Flat Tail" and students pulled out important words that stuck out to them from the story. Students also sketched the coyote artifacts and wrote three describing for each artifact.

Students are going to be writing their own legend stories following the template "How the _____ got its ______." I let them know this weekend they could brainstorm some ideas for the story with their families. We have watched some "Tinga Tinga Tales" on Youtube that follow a similar theme with African animals as well. Here is the list of animals that students can choose from:

  • Raven

  • Bear

  • Bison

  • Cougar

  • Eagle

  • Porcupine

  • Duck

  • Beaver

  • Coyote

  • Fox

Please do not write the story at home as we will be going through this process together at school. I cannot assess a story that is written at home!

During lunch time, students have the opportunity to earn "Helping Hearts" stickers. Once they get to 20, they earn a reward. We reached 20 hearts last week, so on Thursday we voted to watch Air Buddies during our snack and lunch time. We ended up finishing it during snack time on Friday.
