February 21-24

Hello families,

Brrrr! What a cold week - we had to spend lots of time indoors this week and we are missing our fresh air breaks! I hope you get to spend a little more time outside this weekend!

In math we are beginning to learn about addition strategies. We discussed what strategies are and why they are important. They are important because they help us solve problems more efficiently and can help us to communicate our thinking more clearly. This week we started learning about counting-on! We also started doing math groups similar to the Daily L.A. groups.

In science, we continued talking about temperature and states of matter. We learned about solids, liquids and gasses and enjoyed coming up with examples of each one.

In social studies we began learning about communities. We learned about communities and landmarks within our communities. Next week we are looking forward to going on a community walk, likely on Wednesday. I will send a School Messenger on Monday to confirm.

On Wednesday, we celebrated Pink Shirt Day and learned all about kindness. We read the story "A Wrinkled Heart" and learned that we cannot un-do or un-say things, so it is important to think about what we do and say. We also enjoyed "taking over the school" as the grade 3/4 and 5/6 classes attended the Be Brave Hitman game. We did body breaks and sketching in the portables, had a dance party in the gym and a picnic lunch with all the grade 1/2 classes in the gym, we did a word collector activity in the grade 3/4 classrooms and buddy reading in the learning commons. We also made "be kind" t-shirt puzzles where students wrote a kind act or idea on each piece. They were sent home today - students who didn't quite finish can finish them at home, and then they can be cut to use as puzzles if you choose!

Dear families,

Mark your calendars! The fun and excitement of a Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school again during Student Led Conferences! To adapt to our changing needs, Scholastic has developed a Hybrid Book Fair (in-school with a virtual link) to provide an opportunity for our students and families to experience the joy of reading together.

So, save the date! Our Scholastic Virtual Book Fair will take place on:

Monday, March 6th till Monday, March 13th

When it’s time to shop, you can choose to visit the virtual link and purchase online or in person during Student-Led Conferences. More information to come!

Happy reading!
