This week we made a few changes in our classroom! I was itching for a bit of a change and re-arranged the classroom a little. We also decided to start our mornings a little differently. Each morning students have a literacy and numeracy activity to complete. This week we did word scrambles and number bonds! They can choose between the mild, medium or spicy difficulty levels. Students enjoyed using the moveable alphabet to unscramble the words, and various math materials to help them solve the number bonds.
In literacy, we learned about the "ing" sound and talked a little bit about the rules for how to add ing to a word. During Daily L.A. students worked together to build as many ing words as they could.
We also learned about nouns and students created a list of nouns in the classroom! This video talks about common and proper nouns which we discussed a bit but haven't focused on yet.
We have really been enjoying using the program Spellie. Students wanted me to share this on the blog again. There is a new word challenge every day if you'd like to try it on the weekend. Please don't do it in the mornings during the week as we will be using it at school!
This week we read the book Junie B. Jones is a Beauty Shop Guy. We all love reading Junie B. Jones books together - it's probably my favourite part of the day! She is so hilarious. I do change up some of the words when we're reading as well just because she likes to use the words "dumb" and "stupid" a lot - we just go with silly!
In math, we worked on the "t-shirt problem" to challenge students' thinking a little bit! We ended up working in grade 1 and grade 2 groups to solve the problem together.
In science, we have been learning about hot and cold temperatures. This week we did an experiment with different containers of water. Students observed the water and made predictions about the temperature, and then used a thermometer to read the actual temperature of the water. We had two room temperature containers that I coloured red and blue to try to trick students! We had one container with hot water, one with cold water, and one with snow.
Helping Hearts
During lunch hour, students can earn "helping hearts" for showing kindness. Once students reach 20 hearts, they earn a class prize. This week students were really excited to earn their 20th heart! We decided that as a prize, students will watch The Lorax during lunch on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week. They also would like to have a pj day so we will do this on Wednesday, February 15th! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!
Next Week
Although next week is a short school week, we have a lot going on! On Monday, we are going to be working on our Secret Valentine's Day cards. Rather than making a Valentine for each student, everyone will make a thoughtful Valentine for one of their classmates. On Tuesday, we look forward to celebrating Valentine's Day together! Please remember that treats should not be brought to share with the class. As an alternative, you could send a special treat in your child's lunch kit for them to enjoy. We are also excited to be welcoming Mrs. Carreño back to the classroom on the 14th! She will be with us Tuesday-Friday until the end of April finishing up her final practicum before becoming a teacher! On Wednesday, we will be celebrating the 100th day of school and the Family Dance in the evening. Please remember that Thursday and Friday is Teacher's Convention and there will be no school for students. Enjoy the 5 day weekend!
Volunteering
I could use a hand with a couple of odd jobs around the classroom if anyone is interested in volunteering the week of the 21st. Please send me an email if you're available to help out! Also, please let me know if you are interested in volunteering as a reading volunteer in the classroom on a more regular basis and I can send some information your way!
Scholastic
Scholastic has not been sending class sets of monthly flyers but they always have monthly flyers you can access online - Here is the link for February's Flyer! Our class code is: RC142429

Hello families, We made it through our first (almost) full week of school! We are focusing a lot on learning expectations and building classroom community. We’ve been enjoying starting each day in circle getting to know our classmates. The pictures will be a little limited for the first few weeks until we have photo release information! This week we talked a lot about carpet expectations. We read a story called “Whole-Body Listening at School” and learned about Listening Larry. Ask your child how many parts of our body we can listen with… it’s not just our ears. You can also follow up with “Whole Body Listening at Home” if this is something you are working on at home as well! I also like to use my cat, Eli, to show carpet expectations! Whole Body Listening at Home This week we started some introduction lessons to the UFLI literacy program. We’ve been learning how our mouth moves in different ways to make different sounds. We also started learning about “sky, grass, dirt” letters
Hello families, We had a very busy week getting ready for our winter concert and our Calgary Humane Society fundraiser! Students love baking and packaging treats, making posters, and some students were even challenged to learn how to curl the ribbon! On Friday we used our skip counting skills to count up all the money we've raised so far. We've raised $666.85 and are hoping to break our record of $700 from last year! All of this work is connected to our health and wellness curriculum (volunteerism), social studies, science, art, math and literacy! Wow! Math In math we've been continuing to work with number bonds. This week students learned how to determine the missing number in a number bond when given the whole and one of the parts. This is a pre-cursor to subtraction! We used manipulatives and drawings to help us with this work! We also re-invented our Spider Legs math game to make it Christmas themed! Instead of drawing a spider and adding legs, students used a tree an
Hello families! We had a great first week of school! I have a goal this year to be a little more concise with my blog posts. We'll see how it goes! This week we spent some time getting to know each other. We learned about sharing circles and have started both mornings in circle getting to know more about one another. We are learning the importance of listening to each other and giving everyone a chance to speak. We also read the story "You're Finally Here" by Melanie Watt. We enjoyed re-creating the main character of the story. It was great to see students' cutting skills and their ability to follow each step of the activity. We talked about how the eyebrows can convey different feelings and can really change the bunny's expression. On Friday we learned a math game called "What's My Number?" we played teacher versus students and they beat me! Next week, students will play the game with their classmates.
