February 12-14

Hi Families,

Here's a quite update on our short week at school!

Math

We practice how to represent addition using pictures. We talked a lot about the difference between showing the whole equation vs showing just the answer. For numbers to 20 (grade 1) we can draw shapes and symbols to show addition and for numbers to 100 (grade 2) we can use base ten blocks and colour to be more efficient!

In math groups, some grade 2 students started learning how to represent addition on an open number line using skip counting. This was a good challenge for them!

Literacy

We did a digraph review this week and a little assessment to see if the class is ready to move on! Overall, students are doing quite well and showed they were ready to move on! I encourage continued practice at home with digraphs if you are able! Again, the resources on UFLI are great (including reading passage, home practice and roll & reads).

We've been working on breaking down the sounds in each word, tapping it out, and graphing each sound.

We started moving on to the long a sound "a_e" which is sometimes called the "bossy e" or "magic e." We only did lesson 54.

Health & Wellness

In PE, we've continued learning some dances including the bunny hop, the cha cha slide, the macarena, the YMCA, etc.

Ms. H is teaching a series of health lessons around healthy sleeping, eating and exercise! On Wednesday we learned about the importance of sleep and students shared two things they do to get ready for bed.

Science

We learned about how snowshoe hares adapt in the winter! We learned from videos and books and practiced taking notes together. We also learned how to draw a snowshoe hare!

We enjoyed sharing kind words about our classmates for Valentine's Day!
