February 20-23

Hello families!

Here's our weekly update!

Literacy

This week we continued learning about the bossy e! We reviewed the a_e spelling pattern with a poem called Birthday Cake. We learned the bossy e with the long i sound. (i_e). We've been working on mapping the sounds, matching with graphemes and re-writing using interlined paper. Grade 2 students learned about the "-tch" sound and we made up our own action! We only got to one more chapter of My Father's Dragon because we had such a busy week! We're focusing in on comprehension questions and problem and solution.

We learned about punctuation focusing on periods, exclamation points and question marks (with a little bit about commas!)

Students also practiced their capitalization and punctuation during Ms. H's wellness lesson.

Words for next week! We didn't get to our quiz today!
I realized I forgot to share this speech information from CBE. Please note they are looking at updating this information.

Math

We're continuing to work on different ways to represent addition! Grade 1s are working on using number lines to 20, tally marks and pictures and grade 2s are using base ten, hundreds charts, and open number lines. On Friday we worked on a formative assessment to check in on students' understanding of ways to represent addition and their fact fluency.

In math groups we had fun using some new math materials and learned some games.

Science

This week we learned about chickadees and how they adapt to winter conditions. We used the same format as last time, taking notes and discussing what we've learned together. We enjoyed learning how to draw a chickadee as well! We're hoping we'll see some at Fish Creek on Thursday.

Health & Wellness

This week Ms. H taught us about the importance of healthy eating and exercise to our overall health. We learned about 3 types of food - go, grow and glow! (whole grain, protein, and fruits & veggies). Pedro the Pineapple helped us understand how important sleep, nutrition and exercise are to our overall physical health!

Today we had fun turning our classroom into a mini yoga studio as Ms. H took us through some yoga poses from the book "Good Morning Yoga."

We LOVED the lion dance presented by Jing Wo Cultural Association!
