January 29 - February 2

Hello families,

Did you know our School Council is now on Instagram? You can follow them to learn more about volunteering opportunities - @lakebonavistaschoolcouncil

Here's our weekly update!

Literacy

This week we learned some new digraphs. We learned the 'ch' 'wh' and 'ph' sound. 'Wh' and 'ph' can be especially difficult when writing words but the hope is that students will recognize these sounds when reading! Students completed a picture sort to determine which pictures started with ch or sh and grade 2 students wrote all the words as well. We did a 'ch' poem and a 'ph' poem and I sent home a 'wh' one on Friday if you'd like to do it at home!

We continued working on making full sentences. Students were given a sentence with a predicate but no subject. We also learned more about capitalization and when we should use capital letters. We are using the M.I.N.T.S acronym to help us remember this! We looked at some sentences with incorrect capitalization and tried to fix them!

Here are our words for next week! Grade ones can choose which list they would like to do! I've started sending our Friday quiz home for families to see.
Math

In math, we started talking about strategies and what it means to do math efficiently (quickly and accurately!) We learned the strategy "Counting On." We'll practice this more next week!

We also did our February calendar! We have a lot of important days coming up in February!

Science

We've been continuing to explore the question: How do animals survive the winter? We reviewed hibernation and learned about migration! Ask your child some animals they know that hibernate and migrate!

Groundhog day came at the perfect time since we're learning about hibernation! We enjoyed learning about groundhog day, reading a story and doing some water colour art!
