Wednesday

Hello families,

Today we continued working with counting-on, our weekly "-ip" words and our Canada maps. We talked about Nunavut today and watched some videos. We started talking about the language of Inuktitut and throat singing. There is a band called "The Jerry Cans" and they are a Inuit folk band from Iqaluit. We watched their Juno performance so the students could hear what throat singing and their language sounded like. There were a lot of mixed reviews - some students thought it sounded beautiful and others said creepy. We discussed how to be respectful of something we may not completely understand and that saying their singing is "creepy" doesn't show respect to other cultures. Check it out here - it's quite interesting!

We are still continuing with our gymnastics unit! If your child has long hair, it would be appreciated if you can provide a hair tie for them to keep in their cubby during the month of January!

YOGA
We very lucky to have a parent volunteer offer to share her yoga expertise with our grade 1 and 2 teachers & students. This Thursday, January 17th, a parent who is certified in teaching children's yoga will be joining us during our PE time to share her knowledge of yoga and help teachers lead students through body awareness, stretches and coordination. This opportunity will connect to our gymnastics introduction, focusing on balances and strength, and will also connect to our social studies program of studies as each pose will be representative of nature and animals in each province/territory of Canada.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this yoga experience please do not hesitate to contact your classroom teacher.

We will have a busy day tomorrow! There will be a Kananaskis in the Classroom presentation in the morning, yoga during our PE time, and Subway fun lunch!
