Wednesday

Hello families!

I just wanted to share a quick blog with you today since we had a pretty exciting day!

Today we talked about buoyancy - an objects ability to sink or float. If an object floats, it is buoyant, and if it sinks, it is not very buoyant. We brainstormed some objects that we know sink or float and had a few objects that we weren't sure about. About half our class thought the pumpkin would sink and the other half thought it would float. We talked about why a pumpkin floats (briefly talking abut density) and it was decided that a pumpkin has a lot of air inside which helps it float, even though it is large and quite heavy.

Students were split into 4 groups for our 4 pumpkins. We talked A LOT about the importance of being able to work in a group, share and listen to other peoples' ideas, and compromise. I shared that even as an adult, you have to be able to work with lots of different groups of people, even sometimes people that you don't agree with or don't get along with, so it is a good skill to start learning! We discussed the fact that we might feel disappointed if things don't go the way we want, and this is ok, but we still need to move on and participate with our group as much as possible. We attempted to name our pumpkins which was definitely a challenging task. We got a few pumpkins named: Cracky and Candy Corn, and will have to work together to choose the other two names tomorrow.

We then talked about measuring width and length. Students used a snap cube and had to predict the width and length of their pumpkin. We then measured them as accurately as we could, considering they are 3D. To measure the weight, students got to hold a basket of toy trains that weighs 7 lbs and then had to decide if their pumpkin weighed more or less than 7 lbs. We ran out of time to weigh the pumpkins so we will do this tomorrow. Tomorrow we will also be describing our pumpkins, designing faces to carve into our pumpkins, and, thanks to some awesome parent volunteers, we will carve the pumpkins! On Friday we will be estimating and counting the seeds and there will be a couple more activities for early next week! We are trying to fit in as many activities as possible before the pumpkins start to rot away on us.

Yearbook Consent
I am still missing a fewyearbook consent forms. Please return them as soon as possible! School Council will keep sending notices home to make sure you are ok with having your child's face in the yearbook!
