Wednesday
Hello families,
Today we started talking about subtraction! Students chose a material to solve some questions and had the option of subtraction to 10, to 20, 2-digit, and 2-digit with regrouping. During work period, we also practiced our Weekly Words and finished our "Spongebob's Secret Valentines" drawing from yesterday.
Last year, I used a program called "Class Dojo" and this year I decided to not use it as I found students were so motivated by getting "points" rather than doing something because it's the right thing to do, because it's kind, or because it's important. Today, we talked a little bit about intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and how it's okay to be motivated by things you want but you shouldn't be doing everything in life just because you want something materialistic out of it. (Obviously we talked about this in more student-friendly language!) We compared doing something for a sticker or an ice cream or doing something because it makes you feel good or because it makes someone else feel good or because you learn something you wanted to learn. So, we are going to give Class Dojo another shot as a means of putting more emphasis on positive behaviour in the classroom. If I'm finding that everything becomes driven by points, I will likely stop using it again. The kids really enjoy it and it helps me to focus on the good behaviour which I definitely prefer to saying, "no" and "stop" so many times during the day. I do not use the function of Class Dojo that connects with parents as I don't find that information is really that helpful in letting you know how your child is doing in the classroom! Here's an image of Class Dojo to give you an idea! (Just a random one from Google... not our class!)
We are expecting to have outdoor recesses tomorrow as long as the weather holds up! Please make sure your child is sent to school with plenty of warm outdoor clothing!
Have a great evening!
