Hello everyone,

This morning we had Daily 5 literacy and celebrated the 100th day of school with our buddy class. We did two experiments... predicting what 100 drops of water looks like and how far 100 steps would take us.



We then had guest reader and went to gym. We did a relay race and it was just warm enough for students to go outside. In the afternoon we had our literacy groups and we had some work period time. During work period, students were working on their weekly words and creating Valentine's Day patterns. After afternoon recess, we handed out our Valentine's Day cards, had a sugar cookie (they are seriously beautiful!) and watched some of the Berenstain Bears Valentine's Day special.



Guest Reader
Thank you so much for helping your children get prepared for their guest reader presentations! It's so awesome to see the growth in their confidence and reading skills. Please try to support your children in choosing a story that takes them less them 15 minutes to read. It is hard for the class to sit quietly for longer than this and when the story runs late we end up being late for gym! If you are ever interested in coming to watch Guest Reader please let me know. We usually do Guest Reader around 10:50am.

I hope to see many of you at the Family Dance tonight! I will be here during the second half of the Dance for the pie throwing!

Hello families,  Here's an update from this week!  Math We started the week looking at the calendar for October! Students wrote/drew about the special days in October and brought their calendars home to help keep them organized! We also learned about symmetry. The kids LOVED this song and were able to choose how explore symmetry with blocks, drawing, or dry erase. We learned a math game called "Knockout" which helps students with subitizing and addition fact automaticity. On Friday we learned about tally marks and did a "roll and tally" activity.  Here's a link to the Knockout game - it's really simple and can be played at home (sorry the site has quite a few ads!)  In literacy, we reviewed the letters N, O, D, U and G using UFLI and Animated Literacy. Hello families,  We had a very busy week getting ready for our winter concert and our Calgary Humane Society fundraiser! Students love baking and packaging treats, making posters, and some students were even challenged to learn how to curl the ribbon! On Friday we used our skip counting skills to count up all the money we've raised so far. We've raised $666.85 and are hoping to break our record of $700 from last year! All of this work is connected to our health and wellness curriculum (volunteerism), social studies, science, art, math and literacy! Wow! Math In math we've been continuing to work with number bonds. This week students learned how to determine the missing number in a number bond when given the whole and one of the parts. This is a pre-cursor to subtraction! November 6-9

 Hello families,  We had such a blast at the zoo on Monday! We learned all about penguins and enjoyed exploring the zoo in our groups. Thank you to the amazing volunteers that were able to join us - I hope you had fun too!  This was three generations of lemurs - a baby, mom and grandma! How sweet!  What a day! Math In math we continued to develop our understanding of place value. Students chose "just right" work - ask your child how they know when classroom work is a good level for them! We practiced writing, drawing and building numbers. Students could choose between teen numbers, numbers to 100, and numbers to 1000. Here's an ABCya game to practice place value! Students briefly learned how to use the Room Recess base ten program to practice identifying and building numbers!  Literacy We reviewed our last letter, C, with our character Crazy Camel.
